Discover the Benefits of Temporary Dental Implants for Children with Missing Teeth
IOS is proud to introduce a new temporary dental implant system “Templant™”to replace one or more front missing teeth in growing and non-growing patients.
What are Temporary Dental Implants "Templant "?
Templant™ is a temporary dental implant made of medical grade titanium that is not treated to prevent osteointegration. It has an active length of 13mm and 1.8 mm width.
The concept to place temporary dental implants has been established since 2003 and there are many publications 1 , 2 showing excellent long-term results.
Why are Temporary Dental Implants Used for Children?
When children lose their teeth, it can lead to various complications such as misalignment or improper growth of surrounding teeth.
Temporary dental implants offer an effective solution by maintaining the bone and the alignment of other teeth. Unlike dental flippers, temporary implants provide a natural-looking and functioning replacement for missing teeth.
Additionally, they can be adjusted as a child grows to ensure proper fit and function, making them an ideal choice for children who are still developing. Temporary dental implants also help prevent bone loss in the jaw, which can occur after tooth loss.
What are the advantages of Templants ™?
The implant has a cutting head, so it is self-tapping and self-threading,
The Templant™ width is only 1.8 millimeter which eliminates the need to make a pilot hole before insertion.
There's no need to raise a flap to place the Templant. Just use a fine explorer to punch a hole where the implant would be placed,
There's no need to use an implant motor as you can use the regular mini-implant handle with its special blade to place the Templant,
You can restore the template immediately without waiting for osteointegration is not the intention in this case.
The template could be adjusted to accommodate for vertical growth very easily.
How to place a Templant™ in a growing child?
Make sure the patient has enough buccal lingual bone width to accommodate the implant as certain traumatic cases might have compromised bone thickness,
Sanitize the area with Peridex™,
After applying a topical anesthetic, apply the desired local anesthesia like lidocaine 2% and wait 1 minute. Do not over anesthetize the area as you don’t want to lose the sensation of the adjacent teeth,
With a fine explorer, punch a small hole where the future Templant ™ will go. This will also help you to sense the bone and the area.
Start inserting the Templant™ in the desired location. If the implant starts to slip, you can adjust the angulation to get some bone engagement and then you can upright the handle again to get straight path,
with few threads into the bone, take a periapical X-ray to make sure that insertion path is in between the two adjacent teeth. You might need to adjust the implant as needed,
Once you are satisfied with the initial insertion path, continue inserting the Templant™ all the way so only the head is visible through the gingiva.
What is needed to place the temporary dental Implants Templant ™?
Liquid dam, Silane and composite to fill the shell
Finishing burs to trim and polish the future temporary crown.
Conclusion
Temporary dental implants “Templants ™” are an excellent solution for children with missing teeth. They offer a range of benefits, including improved speech, better chewing and biting, and enhanced aesthetics. Additionally, they provide the opportunity for the child's jaw to grow naturally before opting for permanent implants later in life. However, it is essential to be aware
